Why It Matters

Student Mental Health Remains a Crisis

National data show that student mental health challenges remain high. Schools are increasingly the primary setting where prevention and early support can reach every student.

39.7%

of high school students reported persistent sadness or hopelessness

20.4%

seriously considered attempting suicide

This is where evidence-based social-emotional learning becomes essential — not as an add-on, but as a core part of education that supports the whole child.

The Signature Tool

The Compass Check-In

Instead of asking whether a feeling is "good" or "bad," the Compass asks a kinder question: Where is my compass pointing right now — and how do I find my way back to Center?

1

Notice

Recognize your internal state

2

Name

Name it without judgment

3

Navigate

Choose a strategy to return to Center

Rest

Drift

Disconnected

6–12 only

Students learn to Notice → Name → Navigate — recognizing their internal state, naming it without judgment, and choosing a strategy to steer back to Center (calm, ready, "home base") from Rest, Rush, Storm, or — for older students — Drift.

The Compass is an original Becoming U Wellness framework. It grows with students from kindergarten through graduation, so a fifth-grader and a junior share the same core language, scaled to their stage.

For School Leaders

A K–12 Wellness Education Framework Your Whole Building Can Speak

Most schools assemble wellness education from disconnected pieces — one program in elementary, something different in middle school, and often very little by high school. Students lose the thread, and so do staff.

The Becoming U Wellness Education framework solves that with one coherent approach, The Compass Check-In, that grows with students from kindergarten through graduation. A fifth-grader and a junior use the same core language, scaled to their developmental stage.

Aligned to the five CASEL competencies and state education guidance, organized around MTSS, and grounded in published research including large-scale meta-analyses showing measurable gains in student skills, behavior, and academic achievement. Every claim is cited.

For District Leadership

The Case for Investing in Wellness Education

Superintendents and school boards need evidence, not promises. Here is the researched case for what high-quality SEL supports — with the honesty note that these findings come from the broader evidence base, not yet from this newly published program.

11 pts
Average academic achievement gain
Percentile-point gain across 213 SEL programs (Durlak et al., 2011)
270K
Students in the landmark Durlak study
Social, emotional & academic gains across 213 programs
11:1
Average benefit-cost ratio
Average across six evaluated SEL programs (Belfield et al., 2015)
50%
Of lifetime diagnoses begin by mid-teens
Half of all lifetime conditions start by age 14 (Kessler et al., 2005)

Academic Lift

  • 11-percentile-point gain in academic achievement vs. peers without SEL (Durlak et al., 2011)
  • Improved social-emotional skills, attitudes, and classroom behavior (Durlak et al., 2011)

Behavioral Shift

  • Reduced conduct problems and disciplinary incidents (Durlak et al., 2011)
  • Reduced emotional distress, including anxiety and depressive symptoms (Durlak et al., 2011)

Operational & Budget Impact

  • Positive benefit-cost ratios across evaluated SEL programs — about $11 returned per $1 invested on average (Belfield et al., 2015)
  • A shared language that unifies staff, MTSS & family outreach

Evidence-Backed. Implementable. Honest.

Becoming U pairs research-based SEL with a practical, whole-school framework — giving leaders confidence in the investment and a clear path to student, school, and district outcomes.

The Founder

Built by a Practitioner Who's Been in the Classroom

Jackie Sweeney, M.Ed.

Founder & CEO, Becoming U Wellness Education

Licensed School Social Worker · Masters-Level Clinician · Doctoral Researcher · 10+ Years in K–12

For over a decade, Jackie has worked alongside children, families, educators, and school communities as a licensed school social worker, school adjustment counselor, and crisis clinician. Across every setting — from public schools and charter schools to community mental health programs — she witnessed the same challenge again and again.

Students were struggling with rising levels of anxiety, stress, trauma, loneliness, and emotional overwhelm. Educators wanted to help but were often stretched beyond capacity, lacking the time, training, staffing, and resources needed to provide comprehensive social-emotional and behavioral health support.

At the same time, many of the strongest SEL and mental health programs available were locked behind expensive licensing fees and implementation costs, placing them out of reach for the schools that needed them most.

That never felt right. So Jackie founded Becoming U Wellness Education — building what she wished existed: a research-based, freely accessible wellness education framework that every school could use, regardless of budget.
